“I saw the light over the confessional and the voice said: That’s the person to kill.” —Herbert Mullin
There
are a number of murderers that society has seemed to have forgotten
about. Herbert William Mullin is a serial killer who was active
during the 1970s. He killed 13 people in the state of California. He
claimed that the murders were going to prevent further earthquakes
from affecting the state. He was determine to be considered sane and
stood trial and was convicted for first degree murder. While this man
does not seem sane at all he was still sent to trail and got a life
sentence. He is still in prison today but not talked about.
Early
Life
Mullin
was born in 1947. His father was a veteran from World War II who
taught his son about guns when he was young. Mullin was not abused as
a child and had many friends. After he graduated from high school his
best friend was killed in a car accident. Mullin made a shrine to his
friend in his bedroom. He also expressed fears that he was a
homosexual even though he had girlfriends.
Mullin
continued to have mental health issues and in 1969 his family had him
checked into a mental hospital for treatment. He was in and out of
several treatment centers over the next couple of years but each time
he did not stay long. He had some warnings that his mental health was
further deteriorating. He would put cigarettes out on his skin and
would shout at people in this apartment that did not exist. Some
experts stated that Mullin had paranoid schizophrenia which was
starting to show up in high school. His experimentation with LSD
could have sped up the onset process.
Murders
In
1972 when Mullin was 25 years old he moved back to live with his
parents. He stated that he was hearing voices in his head. These
voices told him that an earthquake was about to happen and
sacrificing humans would be able to save the state from disaster.
During this time the Vietnam War was going on. According to Mullin
there was enough death of Americans to keep the earthquake from
happening. By late 1972 when the war was not in full force Mullin was
convinced he had to kill people to keep the earthquake from
occurring.
